Bertram C. Towne photographs, ca. 1884-1887 [graphic]. ca. 1884-1887.

Chiefly outdoor scenes from southeastern Alaska, Portland and Mount Hood in Oregon, and Mount Shasta in northern California. Several Alaskan images of Chilkoot Pass and the Muir Glacier (Glacier Bay) are natural scenes, while the rest are of settlements and people in Sitka and Howkan, including images of Tlingit Native Americans tending to activities such as drying fish and selling berries. Many of the Alasks photos appear to have been taken in 1887. The collection also includes three portraits.

Photographer Bertram C. Towne was active in Portland, Oregon, 1884-1895. From 1884-1887, Towne and Elbridge W. Moore operated the San Francisco Gallery, also listed as "Towne & Moore," in Portland as partners, but from 1888-1895, the company was known as the "B.C. Towne Photograph Company."
